Letters to Lelia M. Smith, 1882, 1883.

In a letter, 1882 March 28, Carroll describes his reaction to an "inhuman examination" given by John B. Minor which no one thinks he has "curled"; a sermon by Whitely, a student of Noah K. Davis; a "sacred concert" at the Minors; calling on a "vapid and insipid" young lady; and a reading by a fellow student from Thackeray and Dickens. University students mentioned include George Bain, Clem Gaines, Frank Massie, Patterson, Hardy Walker, and Kit Williams. In a letter, 1883 June 6, Carroll writes from Halifax, N.C. about poor health that caused him to return home from Chicago.
